Painted miniatures by Michael Holzapfel

Unfortunately Battletech miniatures are often perceived as not being ‘high quality’ miniatures. Even when it comes to giant robots, many people – including Battletech players – point to other manufacturers, big and small, pointing out how superior their product is. Obviously I don’t agree with that sentiment, but I do admit that Battletech miniatures arguably aren’t the best product they can be (yet). However, Iron Wind Metals, the manufacturer of the official miniatures, has listened to the complaints and really stepped up the QA process. The miniatures produced over the last year and a half or so have been a huge improvement and a giant step in the right direction. One of the best examples is the recently published Carronade miniature. It is awesome and doesn’t have to shy away from comparisons with other miniatures and systems. Quite the contrary. I think it is easily superior to many other giant robot miniatures in 6mm scale out there.

The Carronade is a new Free Worlds League designed, which was introduced in the Dark Age era. With that in mind I decided to give the scheme of the Oriente Hussars another shot, easily one of my favorite FWL schemes. I tried some new twists on the weathering, experimenting with a stippling technique. While I think the results are promising, I still have a long way to go …
