The Federated Commonwealth Regimental Combat Teams usually use a scheme of blue and gold, but the 3rd RCT is an exception. Nicknamed “The Penitants” they paint their Mechs jet black.
Black is not an easy color to paint in my opinion as the result can easily look grey or whatever-color-was-used-for-highlights-tinted. I based my highlights around Dark Rubber and Light Rubber of the Panzer Aces line of color. As I had never worked with those colors before in hindsight I would probably have chosen different colors. The Panzer Aces colors are highly pigmented similar to GW’s Foundation Colors. This didn’t exactly help with the blending and the application easily gets a bit spotty when the colors are heavily thinned.
To spice up the black scheme I added lots of little details and effects trying to create a dynamic miniature. To be honest the result wasn’t as good as I had imagined, but I am still satisfied with the Mech

Another BattleMech in a canon scheme this Griffin IIc proudly wears the colors of Clan Wolf’s Blue Keshik. I always liked the ‘come get some’ pose of the Mech so I decided to paint as if the pilot likes to engage in close combat. Obviously he or she knows how to use the massive fists and the many scratches and damaged spots on the armor tell tales of hard fought battles with the Griffin in the thick of it.

The official colors of House Dai Da Chi of the Capellan Condederation are ‘a gold-tinged green with green or black accents’. Intrigued by the gold-tinged green I knew I had to try out the scheme eventually. My approach was to use a rather vivid green build around Reaper Master Series Muddy Green (sound rather bright doesn’t it
) and Vallejo Model Colors Camo Bright Green. To get the ‘gold-ting’ I highlighted the green parts by adding Vallejo Model Air Interior Yellow to the mix until using neat Interior Yellow. For the final highlights I added a drop of white for selected hotspots. The green parts were shaded using a medium to dark blue.
At first I wanted to omit battle damage … but I can’t … I did go light on it however and the damaged spots were painted as if the damage is new and fresh.
All in all a very interesting miniature to paint. You can also see the Firebee featured on camospecs.com with a terrain background.

This UrbanMech IIC was definitely a speed paint for me … hardly one month from buying the miniature to the finishing touches
The miniature has been slightly reposed from its static pose to be a little more dynamic – the legs were bent at the knees and some movement added to the hips trying to create the impression that the Mech is twisted to the left a little. I just wanted to add a little movement without going over the top as the UrbanMech is very a very slow unit in-universe, especially for a light Mech. But since it is a specialist for urban combat (d’oh) speed is not of essence.
Painting-wise I tried a few new things and experimented a little. While I am happy with the overall result it didn’t quite turn out as planned … so what did I do? Continue reading UrbanMech IIC »
